Get to know the Magical Town of Chiapa de Corzo

Chiapas always has something to offer so that its visitors leave the state full of memories and souvenirs. Chiapa de Corzo stands out among the many attractions that conquer its visitors' souls. It’s considered one of the oldest cities in Latin America—it was founded in 1528.

It isn’t surprising that the name of Chiapa de Corzo would be confused with that of the state of Chiapas, since its origin goes hand in hand: the first inhabitants of this territory were the Soctona ethnic, whom the Mexicas called “chiapas”. Besides, in this place, it was founded what was the first capital of the state.

During Colonial time, Dominican missionaries established and named the place as Chiapa de los Indios. At the late 19th century the city took the name of the prominent Chiapas politician Angel Albino Corzo and become what we now know as the Pueblo Mágico de Chiapa de Corzo, where its prehispanic and New Spain past coexist harmoniously.

Climate in Chiapa de Corzo is warm and humid due to its proximity to the Grijalva River—its average temperature is 24ºC (75º F). While you get to know the place, you can refresh yourself with “pozol”, a prehispanic origin typical drink prepared with water, corn and cocoa.

Chiapa de Corzo is a 30-minute drive from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas’ capital, so you can plan a weekend stay if you want to visit one of its must-see attractions—the Cañón del Sumidero, one of the many accesses to Chiapas impressive jungle.
