Comitán de Domínguez, located two hours and 25 minutes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, is known as the cradle of Chiapas' Independence. Before becoming part of Mexico, it was an independent country for a time before rejoining the Mexican Republic.
This Magical Town in the heart of the Mayan world boasts colorful courtyards, windows showcasing archaeological sites and colonial precincts, and is filled with elements of deep and rich significance, which you can appreciate in its natural diversity and cultural complexity.
With a pre-Hispanic origin, Comitán was founded by the Tzeltal indigenous people and known as Balún Canan or "Place of the Nine Stars". It was later conquered by the Aztecs and renamed Comitán, which means "Place of Fevers". After years, it received the surname Domínguez in memory of the Mexican physician and politician, Belisario Domínguez.
As you wander through the city, you can admire its traditional architecture with red tiles and light neoclassical touches, famous for its haciendas and as the home of the poet Rosario Castellanos, which has attracted intellectuals and artists. However, there are no direct flights to Comitán from Mexico City, but you can reach the nearest airport in Tuxtla and take a bus or car.
