San Juan Chamula

Get to know San Juan Chamula

Located just 10 kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas, the small town of San Juan Chamula represents a fascinating blend of religious syncretism.

Here, the indigenous Tzotzil people seamlessly combine teachings, customs, and beliefs from their pre-Hispanic heritage with Christian traditions introduced during colonization. Rituals with animals and shamanic healings take place here around the clock. To enter, you must leave behind your camera, cellphone, and biases. "Being open" takes on a new meaning in this sacred space.

Upon reaching the town center, you'll encounter the expansive Central Plaza, unlike any other you've seen before, devoid of benches or trees. At the far end stands an impressive white chapel with aquamarine details, inviting you to explore further.

Don't miss the Church of San Juan Chamula, one of the most unique temples you'll ever see. Its decorative arches burst with vibrant colors, hinting at the hidden mysteries beyond its doors. Be cautious upon entering, as photography is strictly prohibited.

Afterwards, savor a sip of pox, a corn-based aguardiente traditionally popular in Maya culture, to complete your visit. Then head to the market, not housed in a building but in a bustling tianguis offering handicrafts, fresh fruits, takeaway meals, and freshly prepared snacks.

Explore the town and immerse yourself in experiences you won't find anywhere else.
