Get to know Tapachula

Chiapas is a state that stands out for its natural beauty and the many traditions that its municipalities safeguard. One of the most important is Tapachula, also known as the Pearl of Soconusco because it is literally the jewel of this region of great economic, cultural and historical wealth.

Tapachula is located in the south of the state of Chiapas, a few kilometers from the border between Mexico and Guatemala in the Soconusco region. By road it is approximately 6 and a half hours from San Cristóbal de las Casas and 5 and a half hours from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, it has an airport so you can take a direct flight from Mexico City.

The weather in Tapachula, Chiapas, changes depending on the altitude so in some areas the temperatures are usually hotter and more humid, mainly in the jungle areas. Although on the summit of the Tacaná volcano the weather is temperate so the minimum temperature reaches 14ºC ( 57ºF).

It was founded in 1486 by a people who paid tribute to the Aztecs and, during the Colonial era, achieved recognition as a village. In 1924, Governor Tiburcio Fernández decreed Tapachula as the provisional capital of the State of Chiapas.

It is a city that proudly shows its past through its architecture, which coexists with the present opening its doors to those visitors who wish to know more about its history.

Walking through its Historical Center is a delight since besides breathing fresh air and enjoying its warm weather, in your journey through its small streets you will fall in love with the dozens of large houses and art-deco residences very well preserved in which the stories that have laid the foundation of its traditions and culture have been developed. Two of great importance are the building of La Portaviandas and Casa Verdun.

Tapachula is a city that embraces visitors with the warmth of its people and wonders in every corner. In its surroundings, you can find the Tacaná Volcano which should be visited preferably from November to April when the rainy season has passed.
