The Comarca Lagunera owes its name to the fact that it is located in an area where 13 lakes used to be, and is currently one of the most important points in northeast Mexico. Among its municipalities is Matamoros, a small city located a few miles from Torreon.
Matamoros is located in the southwest of the state, bordering the municipalities of Francisco I. Madero, San Pedro, and Viesca. To get to Matamoros by road you must drive 30 minutes from Torreon, 40 minutes from Gomez Palacio, Durango; 3 hours and 35 minutes from Durango capital, and 4 hours from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The closest airports are Torreon and Ciudad Acuña.
The climate in Matamoros, Coahuila, is warm and very dry with an average temperature of 22 to 24ºC (72 to 75ºF) with little rain from May to July. Between December and January frosts can occur with temperatures up to 0º C (32º F), so we recommend you to prepare your luggage well if you travel to this city for the end of the year.
Although it could be considered as a conurbated area of Torreon, Matamoros is a city that has its own history and seeks to preserve it in its monuments, religious temples, handicrafts, and sites such as La Cueva del Tabaco (The Tobacco Cave).
Its landscapes are light recreations of the desert so you can see small cacti and xerophilic plants, but also has some areas where you can find mesquite whose wood is still used as fuel. They still operate mines from which construction materials and Matamoros clay are extracted, from which bricks of the best quality are made.
Before being known as the Villa de Matamoros in honor of Mariano Matamoros, it was inhabited by groups that settled on the land that was owned by the Marquis of Aguayo. Unfortunately, in 1839 a great flood happened that made them look for a new place to live.
As you pass through this city you will find the work of local artisans, who masterfully handle the wood they work with and with which they build ingenious toys, the same ones they make out of tin. One activity that mainly women do is hand-decorated pottery in their homes.
