Get to know Celaya

There’s no sweeter destination in Mexico than Celaya, Guanajuato. This mild climate city is connected to its gastronomic traditions; its tourist attractions and all-budgets hotels have made it perfect for those looking for exploring new flavors in a quiet atmosphere.

 

In 1570 Celaya was founded in Guanajuato region, known since then as “La Puerta de Oro del Bajío” (Bajío’s Golden Gate) due to its commercial relevance during colonial times. Its privileged location in the Mexican Bajío high plateau generated plenty of harvests and organized the distribution of mining products between Guanajuato and Zacatecas. With the railroad arrival during Porfiriato, city growth was exponential.

 

Celaya is very nice to look at because of its most emblematic buildings neoclassical style such as the cathedral, the Templo de la Tercera Orden (Temple of the Third Order) or the Templo del Carmen (Temple of Carmen), the latter built by renowned Mexican architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras.

 

If you want to delve into the roots of the city, your itinerary must include visiting the Celaya and Mummies museums. You can’t leave the city without trying its candies, some of them with colonial heritage such as custards, marinas, jamoncillos, obleas and, of course, the cajeta. If you prefer something salty, the gorditas de tierra negra, handmade on the comal and stuffed with pork or chipotle cheese with a molcajete’s sauce touch, will become your new favorite dish.
