Get to know Salamanca

Baptized by the Otomi as Xidoo or “Place of Tepetates”, this important city 68 kilometers southern Guanajuato capital, belongs to Bajío industrial corridor. If you stop in its clay roads, the prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) appear and at a distance the historical buildings reveal that in Salamanca there’s much more to discover.

 

Famous for hosting the busy community of Valtierrilla, also known as the “World’s Nopal Capital”, Salamanca offers unreal amounts of this cactus wherever you walk. Every historic center corner will slow down your steps without knowing if it’s because of the charm of its ancient buildings such as the four-centuries-of-stories-to-tell Templo de San Agustín, the feeling of forgetting days going by in its Jardín Constitución or the greeting of the sun that demands tasting a traditional “pasta” sherbet.

Salamanca is just 30 minutes from Irapuato (27 km), 54 minutes from Celaya (47 km) and one hour 20 minutes from León (92 km), as well as one hour 10 minutes from Guanajuato capital. So, it has excellent connectivity and the alternatives to get closer to the city are diverse.
