Get to know Tula de Allende

If you look on the Tula de Hidalgo map, you’ll find one of those exceptional cases where different cultures' mixture gave cause to such an enriching past, which until today is one of the distinctions that make its residents prouder.

 

This incredible Mexican destination in the state of Hidalgo celebrates with tourism its full of prehispanic traditions heritage, which can be traced to its Toltec culture representative archaeological zone, at it’s finest hour considered the Mesoamerica’s biggest with approximately 85 thousand population thanks to its pleasant climate and natural wealth.

 

Tula was several important battles’ scenario, especially during Mexican Independence and Revolution movements, reasons for which it adopted Miguel de Allende’s surname as a tribute to this insurgent captain.

 

Tolteca means “cultured man” and, to date, Tula de Allende honors its ancestors by showing off to visitors the archaeological remains that surround it, besides the cultural clash with 16th-century buildings such as the Parroquia y Exconvento de San José.

 

Another obligatory stop is the Old Railway Station, built in 1870 and key in the territory's development. Its hotels usually have a privileged location surrounded by museums, parks and open spaces such as the Plaza de las Artesanías, a tourists’ favorite for buying souvenirs.

 

As a brief cultural share, it was here where Papantzin discovered the mead extracted from the maguey, that when fermented gives rise to pulque. An experience that you shouldn’t miss is trying it with some chicken or mutton mixiotes or, better yet, with delicious and exotic escamoles (ant’s roe, considered the Mexican caviar) that only occurs in season and whose cradle is also maguey.

 

It is possible to get to Tula de Allende from Mexico City in a one hour 40 minute overland journey. From Pachuca it will take you just one hour by road.
