Get to know Isla de los Alacranes (Scorpion Island)
The island’s name comes from the fact that it is shaped like a scorpion. Access is by boat that you can board from the pier of the Chapala boardwalk.
It is a site of great importance, because it is one of the most emblematic ceremonial centers of the “Wixárica” culture. In 2017 it was declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as a Sacred Heritage of the “Wixárica” people of “Xapawiyemeta”. According to the “Huicholes”, the island is one of the three mythological cycles that gave rise to humanity.
The “Wixárica” community makes a ceremony every year and they make offerings to honor life and thank the existence of the lake.
