Oaxtepec

Get to know Oaxtepec

This town is located in the municipality of Yautepec, in the state of Morelos, and is famous for its spas and excellent atmosphere for weekend vacations.

But what few know is that it was a beloved place for the Tlatoani of Tenochtitlán, Moctezuma Ilhuicamina, who found in those lands a paradise he initially proposed to conquer and ended up conquering it.

Its original name comes from the Nahuatl term Huax-Tepec, whose interpretation translates as “El Cerro de los Guajes” (“The Hill of the Guages”).

And it was in this Cerro de los Guajes where years later a beautiful ethnobotanical garden would be built courtesy of Moctezuma and its natural pools would be adapted to turn it into a paradise just 95 km ( 60 miles) from the heart of ancient Tenochtitlán.

Health also found its place in Oaxtepec, where herbalism played a very important role and the result was the construction of an important hospital center.

To get to Oaxtepec it will take you 1 hour 40 minutes by car from the downtown of Mexico City (100 km / 62 miles), 2 hours by car (150 km / 93 miles) from the city of Toluca and, if you leave from the city of Puebla, 1 hour 30 minutes (116 km / 72 miles).
