Get to know Puerto Balleto (Islas Marías)

The Marías Islands, also known as Puerto Balleto, are a group of four islands located in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of the state of Nayarit. These islands were historically used as a penal colony, but in 2019, the Mexican government decided to close the prison and transform the Marías Islands into a cultural and ecological center.

Previously, the Islas Marías housed a maximum-security prison, which operated from 1905 to 2019. During its operation, the prison was considered one of the toughest in Mexico and housed both political prisoners and common criminals.

After its closure as a prison, the Marías Islands have become a tourist destination and a hub for environmental conservation and protection. The Mexican government has implemented programs to rehabilitate the islands' flora and fauna, and efforts have been made to safeguard and preserve their rich biodiversity.

Today, tourists can visit the Marías Islands and enjoy their natural beauty, pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the opportunity to see a wide variety of birds and marine species. Guided tours are also available to learn about the history and ecology of the islands.

The Marías Islands are a destination that combines history, nature, and conservation, providing visitors with a unique and enriching experience.
