Former Convent of Santo Domingo

The Former Convent of Santo Domingo, located in the historic center of the city of Oaxaca, is a monument of great cultural value. Built by Dominican friars in the 16th century, it is a masterpiece of the New Spanish Baroque style. Inside, you can appreciate the plaster relief sculptures representing the genealogy of the Dominican family, as well as the gold leaf vine that hides religious and symbolic figures.

In addition to the church, Santo Domingo is a cultural center that includes the Ethnobotanical Garden, the Fray Francisco de Burgoa Library, the Public Hemeroteca of Oaxaca, and the Museum of the Cultures of Oaxaca. The latter houses a room dedicated to the Treasure of Tomb 7 of Monte Albán, with an impressive collection of objects made of gold, silver, semiprecious stones, and other precious materials.

If you plan to visit Santo Domingo, don't miss the opportunity to explore the Ethnobotanical Garden. You must make a reservation in advance, but it's worth it. Here you will find plants that have evolved since the Jurassic period, pumpkin seeds over 10,000 years old, and an herbarium of traditional medicine. There are also workshops where you can learn to dye fabrics with añil and make leaf figures. Don't miss this fascinating experience in the heart of Oaxaca.
