Get to know Huautla de Jiménez

Find your favorite destination and explore its charms

Although there are several Magical Towns in Mexico, few carry a mystical halo because of their traditions, and in this case, we must recognize immensely Huautla de Jimenez, in Oaxaca.

Huautla, surrounded by the beautiful vegetation that only exists in the Sierra Mazateca, seems to be a scenario that invites meditation among its mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and caves that form its landscape mixing with the smell of cocoa, incense, and coffee that are cultivated in its lands.

Unfold your wings in the “Place of the Eagles” (by its Nahuatl origin name in English), where you will not only learn about the cosmogony of its Mazateca indigenous heritage but also about the buildings that adorn the town such as La Catedral de San Juan Evangelista, whose bells date back to 1866 or the clock tower, created in the 1920s and now a cultural center.

At 254 kilometers ( 158 miles ) from the capital of Oaxaca, the best time to visit this town is between March and May, when the typical rains stop to give way to a hot climate, not so humid.

In July, the Festival Internacional María Sabina (Maria Sabina International Festival) usually takes place, focused on rescuing traditional medicine techniques and, to better complete your tour, we recommend visiting the museum dedicated to her.

If you get hungry, you can't miss the tesmole tamales, the goat broth, or a torta de acuyo or atole agrio (made of fermented corn, pipian, and beans), a gastronomic heritage with a great almost ritual load.
