The beauty of a Magical Town

 

The Pueblo Mágico of Huauchinango (Magical Town of Huauchinango) is surrounded by hills, rivers that descend in waterfalls and deep ravines belonging to the Sierra Norte de Puebla. Therefore, it is an ideal destination to escape for a weekend and do adventure and nature tourism.

 

It is said that Huauchinango is scented by the azaleas and orchids that grow on the banks of the Texcapa River, which borders the town. The aroma is perceived up to the streets of zócalo (main square), such as Guillermo Ledezma and Manjarréz with their gateways and the Santuario del Señor en su Santo Entierro (Sanctuary of the Lord in his Holy Burial site), a former augustinian convent where the residents offer flowers every year. At the front of it, is the Parroquia de la Asunción with its gigantic dome, the third largest in Latin America.

 

What to visit in Huauchinango?

 

You have to take a break in the Plaza de la Constitución, while savoring a candy or macadamia nut liqueur. And, why not?, buy a handicraft in amate paper, glazed clay, ixtle fiber or wool embroidery, with symbols of the Otomí-Chichimeca culture.

 

To breathe fresh air, there are the forests that surround the Necaxa and Tenango dams, near the town. They have cabin rental services, grills, boat rides for trout fishing and walks to the waterfalls of Totolapa and Salto Chico. In these waterfalls you can also camp and practice rappelling.

 

Another of the sites that you should be visit in Huauchinango is la casa y el árbol de “Tizoc” (the house and tree of “Tizoc”), sceneries where the movie starring María Félix and Pedro Infante was filmed, located on the banks of the Tenango lagoon.

 

How to get there: Huauchinango is located two and a half hours from Mexico city and Puebla City. The bus runs depart from the north central bus station (Central del Norte) or, you can get there by driving to the San Martín de las Pirámides road and continue on the Arco Norte highway.
