Pirate's Channel

This place is a favorite among travelers, as it's where the Bacalar Lagoon and the Hondo River converge, marking the natural border between Mexico and Belize. The most common way to get there is by kayak or on boats that offer this excursion. You'll be surprised by the water level, as in some areas it will barely reach your feet.

The Pirate's Canal is the perfect spot to appreciate the different shades of blue in the lagoon, as well as the sandbanks rich in minerals that travelers use to rub on their bodies. Additionally, at the entrance of the canal, you'll find a giant cement boat that was once planned to be turned into a restaurant, but now serves as a great spot to take spectacular photos.

If you're already familiar with kayaking, we encourage you to explore the Bacalar Rapids. This spa is located between the canal that divides the Xul-Há Lagoon and the Bacalar Lagoon, where the water flows with a certain intensity depending on the time of year. Although the current is usually moderate, it allows for kayaking or floating. Without the need for a life jacket, just lay back on the water and let the current carry you. However, you need to be careful to avoid colliding with other visitors.

Tip: To reach the Bacalar Rapids, you don't need a car, public transportation, or to pay for an excursion. It's better to rent a bike in the town center and pedal about 13 kilometers to the spa. This is the best way to continue enjoying the jungle and get some exercise at the same time.
