El Castillo (The Castle), in Tulum

The Basamento, located on the coast, stands out as one of the main structures within the Tulum Archaeological Zone.

Built by the ancient Mayans on a cliff 12 meters above sea level, the Castillo served as a strategic lookout point to prevent possible enemy attacks and guide Mayan sailors who risked colliding with the coral reef off the coast of Tulum. This reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Although access to the basamento is restricted, it can be admired from a lateral staircase, allowing visitors to appreciate the decoration of its three entrances at the highest part, supported by columns shaped like serpents.
