Get to know Muyil

To the northwest of Carrillo Puerto, six kilometers away from its main road, lies one of the most impressive archaeological sites: Chunyaxche, better known as Muyil due to the nearby lagoon of the same name.

During the height of the Mayan culture, Muyil served as an observation point and customs checkpoint, which explains the breathtaking panoramic views it offers of the surrounding mangroves. Moreover, it is an ideal spot for spotting exotic birds that inhabit the region.

Embark on trails winding through the jungle and ancient canals. It is recommended to explore it with a guide who will lead you to discover the numerous pre-Hispanic structures hidden among the dense vegetation.

Among the structures scattered across 38 hectares, you will find pyramid bases, rooms, and religious structures. El Castillo stands out, with its imposing 17-meter-high structure crowned by a temple that was once filled with offerings.

Temple 8, known as the Pink Palace, was an important civic-religious center in the ancient city, surrounded by murals painted with mineral pigments and ceramic pieces.

During the tour, you will have the opportunity to board a boat to explore the natural canals built by the Maya that connect to the Muyil lagoon and eventually to the sea. This was a key point for trade with Cozumel.

Upon reaching the second lagoon, Chunyaxche, you will understand why it is known as the "Jewel of Sian Ka'an". Its 800 meters of crystal-clear waters and the relaxing sounds of nature will provide you with an experience of absolute tranquility for your senses.
