Get to know Kohunlich archaeological site

Imagine traveling back in time to explore a piece of Mayan history. This becomes possible when you visit the Kohunlich Archaeological Zone, the name of a Mayan city and ceremonial center located 65 kilometers from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, in the Grand Costa Maya region. The name "Kohunlich" comes from the English "cohoon ridge," referring to the abundance of cohune palms in the area.

Exploring every corner of this archaeological site reveals the layout of buildings and the remains of ancient water channels and cisterns, prompting reflection on the significance of this site in its heyday.

Surrounded by lush jungle, Kohunlich consists of structures dating back to the early Classic period, between 500 and 600 AD. During its peak, it served as a vital trade hub connecting cities on the Yucatan Peninsula with other Mayan cities in Central America.

Continue your journey through the Plaza of the Steles and the Group of the Ways, civic-ceremonial complexes where Kohunlich reached its peak population. The area boasts several architectural complexes, both ceremonial and residential. Notable among them is Building A-1, also known as the Temple of the Masks, featuring impressive monumental stucco reliefs still adorned with traces of red paint. Other highlights include the Grandstand and El Rey, structures of high status within the complex.
