The greatest pearl of Veracruz
Between the Papaloapan River (90 kilometers / 56 miles from the Port of Veracruz), lies its largest pearl, we talk about Tlacotalpan, whose houses with large doorways, curved red tile roofs, wide porches and warm colors illuminating their walls are reminiscent of the vernacular tradition of the Caribbean.
Founded by Spaniards in the 16th century to develop livestock activities, but above all as a fishing village, it's a unique destination where its warm climate makes it ideal for long romantic walks while watching sunsets from its boardwalk or letting yourself be enveloped by the buildings full of history.
What you cannot miss in Tlacotalpan
Its historical centre was declared World Cultural Heritage in 1998 due to the unique beauty of the architecture of its buildings, harmoniously blending Caribbean and Spanish styles, but above all because it shelters in perfect condition the facilities of a factory from the late eighteenth century.
The best of Veracruz's cuisine
And its dishes are another singularity of the region, a variety to show off its seafood: crab empanadas, fish broth, rice a la tumbada or sea bass stuffed with seafood. Don't you like seafood? You also have a choice between tortitas de tismiche or the traditional tamales de cazuela.
One of the best times to visit “La Perla del Papaloapan” is during the Fiesta de la Candelaria, which has been celebrated for more than a century and floods the streets with colorful flowers that perfume the atmosphere from the last day of January until February 9.
