Get to know Xpujil

On the federal highway, which runs from Escárcega to Chetumal, is this small town with an enormously important Mayan legacy. Xpujil, is nothing less than the head of the municipality that houses the Primer Patrimonio Mixto (“First Mixed Heritage”) in Mexico; Calakmul in Campeche.

To reach “el Lugar de la cola de gato” (cat's tail place) -a plant that for years grew in the site and gave the name in Mayan to this community-, you must travel by land 155 kilometers (155 miles) from Escárcega and 205 kilometers (205 miles) if your trip starts in Chetumal.

Along with other sites such as Hormiguero, Becán and Chiccaná, Xpujil is part of a circuit of archeological zones very close to each other and located in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.

Xpujil in Campeche, would see its most important period during the Early Classic when the whole region became an ethnically defined peninsular block. Historical data show that the archaeological zone dates back to 400 BC.

The pre-Hispanic site is accompanied by a village of the same name that you can tour during your visit, where you will find stalls and restaurants serving typical food, shops to buy some souvenirs or get some snacks to regain energy and continue the pace of the day.
