In Chiapas, another incredible natural setting worth admiring is the La Venta River Canyon, located within the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve. Here, a system of underground rivers is considered the "water reserve for the third millennium" by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp).
To explore the La Venta River Canyon, you need to hire the services of a tour operator. This way, you can enjoy activities such as rafting, rappelling down the canyon walls, swimming, and hiking among the rocks. For example, rafting trips will take you to see the Time Arch, the tallest in the world at 158 meters.
The journey through the canyon begins at El Aguacero Waterfall, a series of cascades that create a unique breeze as they crash against the rocks. These waterfalls give their name to the ecotourism center located within the canyon, equipped with viewpoints, a restaurant, and a camping area.
The best time to visit the La Venta River Canyon is from January to April. After this period, the terrain becomes dangerous due to rains, especially in May, when there are more landslides and increased water flow.
