Get to know Cave of the Pot

70 kilometers from the city of Chihuahua, heading towards Rancho Casa Blanca, lies one of the oldest archaeological zones in Mexico: the Cueva de la Olla. This impressive rock formation is part of a larger complex located within the Valle de las Cuevas.

The Cueva de la Olla, along with the Cueva de la Laja and the Cueva del Rincón, attracts many amateur explorers who enjoy trekking through these historic terrains. The remnants found here date back to around 1100 A.D. and belong to the early inhabitants of the region, who were hunters and gatherers. Their traces can be seen in every corner of the caves.

The Cueva de la Olla gets its name from a large adobe granary, cast in the center of the cave, which is shaped like a pot. This granary was used by the ancient inhabitants to store maize and pumpkins, offering a fascinating glimpse into the agricultural and storage practices of the time.

In addition to its archaeological significance, the natural surroundings of the Cueva de la Olla are breathtaking. The region boasts picturesque landscapes with rich biodiversity, including native flora and fauna. It’s an ideal spot for nature and history enthusiasts, providing the opportunity to combine hiking with the exploration of ancient human settlements.

A visit to the Cueva de la Olla will not only allow you to appreciate Mexico’s pre-Hispanic history but also enjoy the natural beauty of the Valle de las Cuevas. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the panoramic views and the uniqueness of this archaeological site.
