Get to know Mitla Archaeological Site

"The City of the Dead," built on the northern side of the Tlacolula Valley, was the second most important ceremonial center in Oaxaca, surpassed only by Monte Albán.

After the fall of Monte Albán, this pre-Hispanic city became the nucleus of Zapotec political and religious power, a status that endured until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it housed up to 10,500 inhabitants, serving as the residence for military and political leaders and functioning as a religious and military center.

As you explore the remains of Mitla, you'll discover its unique constructions, adorned with mosaic fretwork that displays the distinctive Zapotec style. Beneath the palaces, tombs of prominent figures such as priests have been found.

A notable feature of Mitla is the orderly arrangement of its buildings. Take a walk through the quadrangular courtyards surrounded by large halls and admire the facades and walls decorated with limestone fretwork and inlaid mosaics.

Another major attraction is the Church of San Pablo, built by Spanish conquerors in 1544 on a platform that once held a Zapotec religious temple.

After your visit, don't forget to explore the artisanal mezcal factories in the surrounding area.
