Get to know Hopelchén

Exploring the Chenes Region in southern Mexico is a treat for the memory and soul, as its enchanting landscapes capture the hearts of all who gaze upon them. These lands, with their intensely blue skies, fluffy clouds, and warm climate, gave rise to cities like Hopelchén.

Located in the northeast of Campeche, Hopelchén is a picturesque city reflecting the relaxed lifestyle of southern inhabitants, with its high-roofed houses – designed to mitigate the intense heat – and façades painted in the most vibrant colors.

Hopelchén is close to the border between Campeche and Yucatán, surrounded by the municipalities of Calakmul, Champotón, Tenabo, and Hecelchakán, making the journey to this jungle area a bit lengthy. By road, it is an hour and a half from Campeche, the state capital; two and a half hours from Mérida, Yucatán; and five hours and 45 minutes from Cancún, Quintana Roo. The nearest airport is in Campeche, where you can rent a car or take a bus to this peaceful community.

The climate in Hopelchén is warm and subhumid, with an average temperature of 26º C. Although the rains are light, they can occur from May to October, and even in winter.

The name Hopelchén comes from the Mayan language and means “Place of the Five Wells,” referring to the five wells that the area's first settlers used to obtain fresh water. The Chenes Region is named for the many wells discovered over time, and many nearby communities to Hopelchén have ‘chen’ – meaning well – at the end of their names.

Hopelchén is a small, very peaceful city that's easy to explore on foot. This is the best way to discover its streets and the colonial buildings that have survived various historical conflicts.
