Bocoyna is a municipality located in the highest part of the Sierra Tarahumara in Chihuahua. Here, you will find five important rural population centers: Bocoyna (the municipal seat), San Juanito, Panalachi, Sisoguichi, and Creel. The latter two are widely recognized for their iconic tourist attractions in the Copper Canyon.
Situated along the road connecting San Juanito and Creel is the town of Bocoyna, whose history dates back to the 18th century when it was founded by Jesuit missionaries. As a legacy of this period, they left the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Bocoyna, also known as Casa Cura, in honor of the Jesuit priest Juan María Salvatierra.
Near the town of Bocoyna, you can explore the impressive Valley of the Monks, with its limestone rock formations exceeding 30 meters in height. These structures have been sculpted over millions of years by wind, rain, and strong tectonic movements. This surreal landscape is perfect for hiking and photography enthusiasts.
Additionally, tourists can enjoy the cultural richness of the region, including Rarámuri handicrafts, delicious local cuisine such as corn gorditas, and traditional festivities that showcase the vibrant indigenous heritage of the Sierra Tarahumara. With its majestic landscapes and deep history, Bocoyna offers a unique and unforgettable experience for all visitors.
