Get to know Cerro de la Adoración (Devotion Hill)

Near the Museo Casa de María Sabina is the access point to this hill, also known as the Abode of the Guardian of the Hills. This place holds great tradition and is considered sacred by the locals, especially the Mazatec shamans. Each year, the shamans climb the hill dressed in their traditional attire to perform special rituals to gain the necessary energy for their cleansings and to ask the God of the Hill for peace, harmony, tranquility, and fertility for the lands of Huautla.

To obtain protection, the healers bring gifts and offerings to the summit, such as eggs, candles, and cacao. Additionally, this hill was where María Sabina would collect the mushrooms she used, particularly during the rainy season.

María Sabina was a famous Mazatec healer and shaman known for her sacred mushroom ceremonies, which had hallucinogenic properties. Born in Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca, she became an icon of traditional indigenous medicine and was highly respected for her deep knowledge of medicinal plants and healing rituals. Her ceremonies attracted people from around the world, including scientists and artists seeking mystical and healing experiences.

The best way to visit the hill is with a guide who can share the many legends surrounding this mystical place. If you visit in the summer, you might find mushrooms on the slopes, while the rest of the year you can find other edible plants like anise.

This site is perfect for photography, not only because of its cultural significance but also for its beautiful landscapes. It is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, or even camping.
