Get to know Barranca de los Jilgueros (Carduelis cliff)

Zacatlán de las Manzanas has always boasted the majesty of Barranca de los Jilgueros, which is part of the Sierra Norte de Puebla. On its slopes, ancient pre-Hispanic populations used to inhabit, leaving behind witnesses such as monoliths and petroglyphs that can be admired on a hiking tour.

One of its most sought-after wonders is the Tres Marías waterfall, which is formed by the waters from the Ajajalpan River in its stretch known as San Pedro. The water curtain consists of three levels, and each section is named after a saint: María Dolorosa, María Guadalupe, and María Magdalena. These names have been defended by the locals so that the waterfall is not called "horse's tail". Its height is 300 meters and can be appreciated from the glass viewpoint installed over the ravine.

Barranca de los Jilgueros holds a secret: a 1,400-meter-long zipline to "fly" over it, just like the birds that inhabit there. Tickets for this adventure can be purchased in the town's main square, where you board an old truck that takes you to the zipline. After sliding down, there is a hike along the old path to San Miguel Tenango, once traveled by the Nahua culture.

In the ravine, you will also find lodging in cabins with terraces, perfect for watching the sunrise enveloped in mist and enjoying it with a cup of coffee.
